In this project Conslab provided post-tensioned concrete slabs for five freezers/cool-rooms, all placed over polystyrene – a process that we trialled beforehand to ensure we wouldn’t damage the polystyrene.
We worked with engineering company Sinclair Knight Merz to develop a flatness solution that met Fonterra’s needs while overcoming our challenge of not being able to fix the concrete boxing in place. The result, built to the exacting requirements of the TR34 floor flatness specification, provides forklifts with excellent access to the aisles and storage racks.
In response to a requirement for minimal joints, the floors in the corridors and environmental load-out area (ELA) are a mix of steel-fibre-reinforced, joint-free slabs and post-tensioned slabs to ensure the best economy for each situation. Fibre suppressant was laid on top of the steel-fibre-reinforced slabs to avoid the fibre showing on the surface.
